Lures Me Like a River’s Bend

I have to follow that river,

Bend after bend.

As far up I can go,

To all its springs and its side quests,

Her trickling little toad kingdoms,

Her moss covered stones.

I have to check for life under every rock,

Kick up every pebble,

Turn over every leaf.

See her in bloom,

And see her in snow,

See her frozen over,

And crawl through her mud.

I need to know what’s there,

And nothing lures me like a river’s bend.

  1. A wise woman once said to me, “If you follow someone through the forest, when you get to the other edge you have learned very well the back of the person in front of you. If you go through the forest alone, tripping over every root and smacking your head on every low hanging branch, by the time you get to the other edge, you know the forest…”
