Milkweed

Milkweed grows along the valley’s edge now

Weeds that thrive on freshly turned soil

A safe home for the Monarch caterpillars

Before they grow their orange and black wings

And fly thousands of miles away

The shepherd used to keep this field mowed

But now he’s old and he’s tired

His kids live in a city somewhere far away

So now the milkweed grows

In a few decades the soil will be packed with roots

Beautiful but different

Unrecognizable

The shepherd long gone

His garden’s daffodils shaded by a cathedral of trees

  1. The person, searched to become a butterfly, when, it’s, back where s/he came from, back “home”, a place of, her/his origin, that’s where, s/he will, grow into, something, more mature and, beautiful.

  8. I read last week that butterflies can retain some memories from when they were caterpillars! Studies have shown that certain learned behaviors and memories formed during the caterpillar stage can persist through the metamorphosis process.
