The Destiny of My Poems

I often wonder about the destiny of my poems as I write them.

I contemplate burning them,

Before having to relive the shame of having written them.

Or I just forget them,

Or I hide them by mistake,

In pages of journals, and in the margins of books,

Or I leave them etched into walls or tree trunks,

Or in some unknowable chain of thoughts

That I forgot to remember.

Writing them in sand, and then sweeping them away.

I remember them, I remember them less, I forget them,

I am saddened to have forgotten them.

Some I forgot on purpose.

But then I stumble upon them.

And like the petrichor of the first rain

Reminds you of something once so familiar,

That I still somehow forgot.

How it feels to walk outside and be utterly drenched.

I find myself reliving past lives and versions of myself,

That I had forgotten to forget.

  1. Well-done! What a beautiful poem…inspiring.

I feel your sentiment: when I come across old pieces of mine – where the old becomes new in a way that only a writer can appreciate. Rising up from the ashes of memory like a phoenix, its tears falling to heal the hurts of the past; creating a new, scarred version of myself.

  2. Finding them is like peering in a hidden window into self…I forget what I write so quickly that I often don’t think my ideas come from me.

  5. This resonates with me…. i am traditional as opposed to tech savvy …. to this day, i print out each piece I write and file them year after year … I am not 60 and growing old…. my thought is… what do I do with all the files I have of my poems and writings 🙂
