Mayday Mayday Mayday

A modern-day knight in shining armor

Donned in iridescent and Kevlar stitching

Riding in on his red horse

Face veiled by mask and hood

Vision obscured by smoke and steam

Named three numbers and one letter

Identity identified by the role

Engine 251 Alpha calling on the radio

Mayday

Mayday

Mayday

If the fires don’t kill him,

Then the cancer will.

  1. An intelligent ode to firefighters, imbued with beautiful feeling… like some other volunteer service positions and/or professions, that work must be a calling.

    1. Thank you! I’m a career firefighter myself and wrote this after a line of duty death in our department
